Running a business is difficult enough as is — there’s always payroll to cover, suppliers to pay, customers to talk to. Many, many highs, and even more lows.
But that’s the business side of things. Marketing on the other hand, should never feel like business, per say, even if it might be one of the most important things for every business owner. After all, TBWA, the company famous for many of Apple’s advertising campaigns including Mac v. PC and ’1984′, doesn’t have the slogan, “make it smart, make it beautiful, and claw your eyes out in frustration.” They, too, agree that marketing a business should be fun. Should it be easy? Absolutely not.
But it should be fun, and it should be something that consumers will want to take part in. Or something that they will like they are missing out on if they don’t partake in it. And here’s why.
If You Enjoy It, You’ll Actually Care About It
As the old adage goes, choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. And while it may be easy (or at least easier) to find enjoyment or something that you’ll love in something that you actually love, it is far more difficult to find enjoyment in something that you might not necessarily care a whole lot about — like filing taxes or, in this case, effectively marketing your business. You’ll do it, sure, but you won’t love it.
But in a lot of ways, marketing your business is your business. It’s the products you sell, it’s the people you talk to, it’s the newspapers you’re featured in — it’s why you exist, and why people should care about you. The best brands often answer those questions way, way early on in their development process and have simply been reaping the rewards from all of that hard work.
The goal, then, for any business owner is to figure out why you do what you do so that you can actually care about getting that message out there. And once you figure out that why, it will then be exceptionally easy to start figuring out how to get that message out there. And to figure out who the most receptive people will be to that message and the best way for you to spread that information.
And If You Care About It, You’ll Become Good At It
And if it’s fun and you understand it, you’ll like doing it. You will like working with a designer in order to layout an ad, or working with an online marketing company in order to develop your web presence, or with a digital agency in order to create a mobile experience.
But regardless of what it is, if your marketing dollars (and time) are being funneled into it, you’ll want to be there and make it as best as you reasonably can. You’ll want to pour your blood, sweat and tears into whatever the project is at hand, simply because it will matter to you. And it will be fun.
Then you’ll create things that are not only fun for you to work on, but fun for your consumers to interact with, and something that will be easy to get people to talk about. And that will make all of that business much less frustrating.
